Research Ethics with Vulnerable Populations

The Shaw Center is hosting a new workshop series on how to conduct human subjects research with vulnerable populations. The series is coordinated by Jen Burke Lefever, Ph.D., managing director of the Shaw Center and vice chair of the University’s Human Subjects Institutional Review Board.

Nd Babies And Families

The first sessions will begin during the Fall semester of 2023:

  • Applying the ethical principles of the Belmont Report (Friday 9/15, 9-11 am)
  • Working with the HSIRB to plan and conduct research (Friday 10/6, 9-11 am)
  • Gathering consent and assent to participate in research (Friday 11/17, 9-11 am)

The final three sessions will occur during the Spring semester of 2024:

  • Data management and dissemination with a focus on security and transparency (Friday 1/26, 9-11 am)
  • Safety and referral protocols for reporting suspected child abuse, domestic violence, and suicidality (Friday 2/23, 9-11 am)
  • Increasing access to research through relationships with the community and eliminating barriers to participation (Thursday 3/28, 12-1:30 pm - please note the change in date and time for the final session)

All researchers (faculty, staff, and graduate students) who conduct human subjects research with vulnerable populations are welcome to attend. An RSVP is not required but is appreciated. Please complete this Google form if you are interested in attending: https://forms.gle/zPiR1haJLAQ9KZ6z5

Researchers who actively participate in 4 of the 6 sessions can receive a certificate of completion from the Shaw Center.

The sessions will last approximately 2 hours and occur 3 times per semester. Content will include presentations, activities, and discussions of the day’s topic. The final 30 minutes will be allocated for discussion on any challenging issues.

All sessions will be held in the Shaw Center conference room and snacks will be provided.
